Great food is an essential part of our sailing experience – finding quality provisions and restaurants that delight and surprise without breaking the budget will always be a top priority on Gaviidae.
Provisions – the focus is on quality rather than price to keep the Chef happy
Sault Ste. Marie, ON – Pino’s Grocery Store
Rogers City, MI – Plath’s Meats – excellent smoked pork chops or pork roast
Minneapolis, MN – Penzey’s Herbs and Spices – the aromas are amazing in their Uptown store; also available by mail order
After reading about dehydrated and freeze-dried foods, I thought we should try some on the boat. We initially purchased freeze-dried corn and freeze-dried mushrooms from Mother Earth Products via Amazon. Both were excellent. Update: also love the freeze-dried mangoes, freeze-dried raspberries (amazing flavor when added to yogurt), freeze-dried peas, dehydrated tomato flakes) and freeze-dried red bell peppers. The flavors have been impressive (big) and there’s no empty cans to deal with afterwards. We’ve actually started buying the items in bags rather than the plastic containers. We like these so much we actually have an affiliate relationship with Mother Earth Products – this means we get a $ reward and you get better prices than Amazon.
Restaurants – we won’t list run-of-the-mill joints although we may sneak in a few dives if the food is good!
Sault Ste. Marie, ON – Solo Trattoria – who knew that the Soo would have fabulous Italian restaurants!
Wawa, ON – Best Northern Restaurant – try the Hunter’s Stew for a Polish treat.
Wawa, ON – Kinniwabi Pines – the best Chicken Curry and Roti!
Bayfield, WI – The Fat Radish – love everything and Dan’s Fish Booyah is the best (big enough to split).
