Wild Lupines (lupinis perennis), or lupin, commonly present scattered purplish splashes in the verdant north woods of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan in early summer.
In some cases, these flamboyant 2-3 foot legumes take over entire meadows. One such florapalooza is on the east side of highway 13 just north of Washburn, WI. Cars line the road as passersby stop to gawk and take pictures of acres of these towering cousins of Texas bluebonnets.
